Are you curious about PGT-M, or pre-implantation genetic testing? It’s a specialized procedure that can help couples who are concerned about passing on genetic disorders to their children. If you or your partner is a carrier of a genetic condition, this testing could be a game-changer. Monogenic disorders, like cystic fibrosis or Huntington’s disease, are caused by mutations in a single gene, and PGT-M can help screen embryos created during IVF for these specific conditions.
How Does PGT-M Work?
Well, during in vitro fertilization (IVF), a small sample of cells is taken from each embryo and sent to a lab in London for analysis. While we wait for the results, the embryos are frozen. If any embryos are clear of genetic issues, they can be thawed for transfer whenever you’re ready.
What Conditions Can PGT-M Test For?
PGT-M can test for over 1,700 genetic conditions approved by the HFEA, including well-known ones like Duchenne muscular dystrophy and sickle cell disease. If there’s a condition that’s not on the list, don’t worry! We can apply to the HFEA for approval on your behalf.
The Testing Process
The process involves growing your embryos for 5-6 days until they reach the blastocyst stage, at which point an expert embryologist will take a tiny sample. These samples are then tested, and the results usually come back in about four weeks. Once we get the results, any unaffected embryos are good to go for transfer.
Cost of PGT-M
Now, let’s talk about costs. If you decide to include PGT-M in your IVF treatment, it does come with an additional fee. You can expect to pay around £2,870 per embryo tested, with additional embryos costing £500 each. For a complete IVF cycle including PGT-M, it’s approximately £6,610. Keep in mind that medication costs are separate.
Success Rates
Success rates for PGT-M are promising; NHS data shows that about one in three cycles can lead to a baby. At TFP Fertility, the average live birth rate from frozen embryo transfers is 53%. However, various factors, including age and health, can influence your success.
