My journey to motherhood began back in 2014, just a year after I underwent laparoscopic surgery to remove an ovarian tumor. The months flew by, and I found myself counting the days between each cycle. Friends, family, and even acquaintances who hadn’t even tried to conceive were celebrating their new arrivals while my partner, Jake, and I faced disappointment time and time again. We often found ourselves buying baby clothes, but they were never for us—they were gifts for others. It became painful to see happy parents, and each pregnancy announcement from friends made me wonder if I would ever have my turn.
Despite the well-meaning advice to relax, enjoy life, and just “let it happen,” my life revolved around fertile days filled with hope. However, each month ended in frustration and heartbreak. By late 2016, a diagnostic laparoscopy revealed that I had bilateral fallopian tube obstruction, dashing any hopes of conceiving naturally. Yet, I clung to the belief that miracles could happen. After leaving the hospital, we exhausted every option: herbal teas, wraps, and even prayers. Nothing worked.
Realizing we needed a new approach, we decided to pursue in vitro fertilization (IVF). Emotionally, I felt crushed; the dream of having kids seemed so distant. We briefly considered adoption, but it didn’t feel right. After some therapy sessions, I learned to shift my mindset to a more positive outlook.
In December, I began the stimulation process for IVF. The first transfer in February was a disappointment, as my body rejected the embryo due to an immune issue. But on April 11, 2017, I had my second transfer. Armed with a cocktail of medications and countless injections, I hoped for the best. This time, it worked! Our long-awaited daughter, Amelia, was born on January 2, 2018!
Today, I can say I’m the happiest woman alive. Being a mom is a dream come true, though it’s a journey that many women struggle with. I now cherish every moment with Amelia, and the thought of life without her is unimaginable. Our path to parenthood was arduous and filled with obstacles, yet every challenge was worth it. My only regret is not meeting the incredible doctor who helped make my dream a reality sooner. Now, I’m gearing up for my next challenge: giving Amelia a sibling.
