Overcoming Infertility: A Journey to Healthier Living

Infertility can be a tough road, but for Sophia, it became a catalyst for embracing healthier habits. After struggling for a year to conceive, she decided it was time for a change.

At 30, Sophia consulted a fertility expert after her OB/GYN recommended it following unsuccessful attempts to get pregnant. Tests revealed that she was dealing with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which can complicate fertility. Her doctor suggested they start with medication and timed intercourse, but after experiencing a couple of disappointing cycles, they turned to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

After two IVF attempts, Sophia and her partner, Mark, took a much-needed break to reassess their situation. During this hiatus, a change in her employer’s insurance plan gave them a fresh start for their infertility benefits. Excited by the opportunity, they returned to see their specialist.

During this visit, the doctor had a heart-to-heart with Sophia about her weight. While PCOS was a factor, the doctor emphasized that losing even a small percentage of body weight could improve her chances of success. “I was in the right frame of mind to hear this,” Sophia recalls. “I thought, ‘I haven’t done much to help this process.’”

On the doctor’s advice, Sophia met with a nutritionist who guided her on how to eat better without strict diets. She learned about the benefits of consuming more cruciferous vegetables and cutting back on red meat. The nutritionist encouraged her to aim for a daily intake of around 1,600 calories, and to make lunch her largest meal of the day.

To stay active, Sophia began walking on the treadmill for just 10 minutes three times a week. Gradually, she increased her walking time and frequency until she was walking up to four miles a day, five days a week.

Her partner, Mark, supported her through this journey, even gifting her a digital food scale for Valentine’s Day. “I thought it was odd at first,” she laughs, “but it turned out to be super helpful to keep track of my calorie intake.”

As she stuck to her new routine, the weight began to drop off. By the time she returned to her doctor, she had lost an impressive 70 pounds. Her body mass index (BMI) dropped significantly, which made her doctor very happy.

With newfound confidence, Sophia began her second IVF attempt. This time, she produced 14 eggs and successfully transferred two embryos, leading to a healthy pregnancy. “I feel absolutely amazing,” she shares, noting how her continued walking after conception has given her more energy.

Reflecting on her journey, Sophia acknowledges how her experiences with infertility led her to positive life changes. “It pushed me to deal with my emotions differently,” she says, “now when I feel stressed, I hit the treadmill instead of reaching for junk food.”

The honesty and support she received from her doctor were invaluable. “I knew my weight was a challenge, but the direct conversation really motivated me to make those changes,” she adds.
