Hey there! I’m Maria Gomez, the billing manager here, and I’d love to share my story with you. Growing up as the youngest of six kids in a Filipino family, my parents made the brave decision to move to America in search of better opportunities. We landed in the U.S. when I was just three years old, thanks to my dad’s service in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II, which allowed us to immigrate without the usual hurdles that many faced.
In 1967, we set sail on the USS Cleveland Cruise Ship for a nineteen-day journey, finally arriving at Pier 37 in San Francisco. My dad had already come a year earlier to get everything ready for our arrival. Ever since then, San Francisco has been our home.
I started my career in healthcare by getting my Medical Assistant certificate from Bryman College. My first role was in a small ophthalmology practice, where I enjoyed being a Medical Assistant. I eventually moved up to Office Manager, where I spent 15 fulfilling years. The practice expanded from just three of us to a team of nine, including an Optometrist and an Optician. We even opened the first optical boutique in San Francisco! However, after losing Dr. Leon B. Metz, my mentor and friend, to cancer in 2000, I felt it was time to move on.
That’s when I found a job at Pacific Fertility Center. I didn’t know much about IVF or fertility treatments, but it piqued my interest. I joined the PFC team in 2001, and what an adjustment it was, moving from a small office to a larger one! I quickly realized how rewarding this work would be.
On a personal note, I’m a proud mom of two—my daughter is 23 and studying nursing at San Francisco City College, while my son, 20, is working on his Barber license and dreams of opening his own shop. I also have a five-year-old granddaughter who brings me so much joy. When I’m not busy, you can find me dancing in ballroom and Salsa classes or pursuing my studies at San Francisco City College. I recently earned an A.S. degree in Administration of Justice and a certificate in Forensic Science to help a family member going through a tough time with the law.
My six years at PFC have been incredibly fulfilling. Being a financial manager here allows me to witness the sacrifices families make to pursue parenthood, and I take pride in being part of a team that helps make those dreams come true. The dedication of our physicians and staff to providing exceptional care is truly inspiring. It’s not just a job; it’s a chance to give the gift of life.
