Emma Roberts is a seasoned counsellor with over 27 years of experience in women’s health and independent counselling. She began her career as a qualified nurse and midwife, where she quickly recognized the need for emotional support in maternity care, particularly after working in a Fetal Abnormality Scanning clinic. Her dedication to women’s health led her to a thriving career as a women’s health counsellor, earning accolades along the way, including the prestigious Royal College of Nursing Midwifery Award.
Educational Background
In 2002, Emma completed a five-year training program in Clinical Science Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the University of Kent at Canterbury, following her earlier training at the University of Hertfordshire, where she secured a postgraduate diploma in counselling. During her studies, she received recognition for her exceptional work with bereaved maternity and gynaecology patients. Emma has also enhanced her skills through training at the Tavistock Clinic in London and the Institute of Group Analysis, focusing on perinatal bereavement and group analysis.
Professional Achievements
Emma played a pivotal role in establishing a counselling service within a major NHS Trust in Kent, which earned her the Semper Trust Midwifery Award for her contributions to maternity psychological care. Her passion for women’s health counselling has made it a vital part of healthcare, leading her to receive the Making A Difference Award in 2015. To better serve her clients, she was forward-thinking in introducing telephone and virtual counselling options, catering to those unable to travel due to illness or distance.
Current Practice
Currently, Emma works primarily within the NHS, focusing on maternity, gynaecology, and infertility counselling, while also maintaining a small private practice for other issues. She joined TFP Nurture Fertility in June 2019 and is a Senior Practitioner accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the British Association for Infertility Counselling (BICA).
Teaching and Contributions
Emma is passionate about teaching and has contributed articles to professional journals. She has lectured at Christ Church University in Kent, helping to develop their bereavement modules for midwifery students and providing training for NHS teams to enhance communication skills. Her counselling approach combines client-centred, psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, CBT, and solution-focused therapy, allowing her to deliver high-quality care to infertility patients.
