Welcome to the TFP homepage, where we offer various treatments, including the HyCoSy.

What’s a HyCoSy, you ask? The HyCoSy (Hysterosalpingo contrast sonography) is a non-invasive ultrasound procedure designed to assess the health of your uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. If you’ve been trying to conceive naturally for over a year without success, this test might be suggested to check for any blockages, polyps, fibroids, or other issues that could be impacting your fertility.

Why Consider a HyCoSy?

During natural conception, the egg and sperm meet in the fallopian tubes, so it’s crucial that these tubes are open. If you’ve faced challenges with conceiving, a HyCoSy gives us a clearer view of your fallopian tubes, allowing us to identify potential blockages and diagnose the root of your fertility hurdles. Regular ultrasounds can’t easily visualize the fallopian tubes unless they’re significantly swollen, making the specialized HyCoSy procedure necessary.

Preparing for Your HyCoSy

On the day of your appointment, it’s essential to ensure you’re not pregnant, which means avoiding conception before your visit and stopping any prescribed fertility medications. Arrive with a full bladder, as this helps us conduct a pregnancy test. You can eat and drink normally beforehand, but you might want to take some mild pain relief, like Ibuprofen, about an hour before the procedure since some cramping can occur.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The HyCoSy is done as an outpatient procedure without the need for general anesthesia, taking approximately thirty minutes. Initially, a transvaginal ultrasound probe will measure your uterus and ovaries. A thin catheter will then be inserted into your womb to inject a small amount of saline, highlighting any abnormalities such as polyps or fibroids. Finally, we’ll inject a dye through the catheter to examine the fallopian tubes and womb.

After the HyCoSy

After the procedure, you’ll wait a few minutes to ensure there’s no reaction to the dye. It’s a good idea to have someone drive you home in case you’re feeling a bit off. Rest for a few hours once you’re back. Light spotting is normal, and you should use a sanitary towel instead of a tampon to reduce the risk of infection. You can safely resume unprotected intercourse afterwards.

Potential Risks

It’s crucial to understand that if you are pregnant during the HyCoSy, there’s a risk of miscarriage, which is why we conduct a pregnancy test beforehand. There’s also a slight chance of pelvic infection post-procedure. If you notice a high temperature, unusual bleeding, or strong-smelling vaginal discharge, contact your GP as you may need antibiotics.

Cost of HyCoSy

At TFP Fertility, a HyCoSy costs £550. For more details on pricing and available funding options, check out your local TFP Fertility clinic page.
