Emily and Jack’s Journey to Parenthood

Emily and Jack tied the knot in 2013, both working in the finance sector where they first met. Initially, they weren’t in a rush to have kids; they wanted to focus on their careers for a bit longer. However, by 2019, they decided it was time to start a family, motivated by gentle nudges from family and friends! Unfortunately, despite trying for over three years, they faced unexplained infertility.

Their journey began with a referral for tests at a local hospital. Just before the pandemic hit, they received the diagnosis: Emily had pre-polycystic ovaries, which could lead to irregular periods and infertility. The doctors reassured her that while it was a concern, it shouldn’t prevent them from conceiving. Yet, after no success, they were officially diagnosed with ‘undiagnosed infertility’ and referred to the Thames Valley Fertility clinic.

Emily had attended an online open evening at the clinic and felt a connection with the team. They were knowledgeable and answered all her questions, which gave her confidence in their care. After qualifying for a full cycle of NHS funding, they were ready to begin treatment by September, as life was returning to normal.

Emily underwent two weeks of injections, but her ovaries over-responded, leading to a delay in the fresh egg collection. The team quickly adapted, performing ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) to enhance fertilization success and subsequently froze the viable embryos. However, the embryo transfer day didn’t unfold as planned, with complications preventing a successful transfer. Jack had to wait outside due to post-COVID protocols, and when they finally reunited, Emily was overwhelmed with emotions.

After discussing options with their medical team, they decided to go for an operation to clear any blockages, opting for private care to expedite the process. The clinic’s support throughout was remarkable. They conducted a trial embryo transfer, which revealed a u-bend in one of Emily’s tubes, likely contributing to their challenges. Ultimately, they did the real transfer, which initially seemed successful but ended in heartbreak when the pregnancy failed after two weeks.

Despite the setback, they decided to pursue another round of treatment. This time, it worked! They welcomed baby Mia into their lives. The pregnancy was tough for the first few months, with Emily feeling constantly sick, but the joy of having their baby made it all worthwhile.

Now, life is a whirlwind of joy and challenges. Emily expresses that while it’s hard work, settling into a routine has brought them immense happiness. Jack had a bit of a shock adapting to parenthood, but he’s doing great now. As for the clinic, Emily couldn’t speak highly enough of the staff. They plan to reach out soon to try for another child, as they still have embryos frozen in storage.
