Embracing Laser Technology in Fertility Treatments

Hey friends! We’re excited to share some awesome news from the lab: we’ve just added a cutting-edge laser to our toolkit! This nifty device will enhance some of our key procedures like Assisted Hatching (AH), Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), and Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis/Screening (PGD/PGS).

So, what does this mean? Well, when we work with eggs, we need to create a tiny opening in the protective layer around them, known as the Zona Pellucida (or “zona” for short). Traditionally, this was done using an acid solution that slowly dissolved the zona, but with our new laser, we can make precise openings in a flash!

The zona is crucial because it only allows one sperm to enter and fertilize the egg before it hardens up. As the fertilized egg divides, the zona keeps everything snug inside. After about 5 to 6 days, the embryo is ready to break free and implant in the uterus. That’s where Assisted Hatching comes into play—it helps the embryo hatch more easily. With the laser, we can create the perfect-sized hole in less than a minute compared to the 5 minutes it took before. This means less time handling the embryos and more precise results.

Now, you might be wondering, does using a laser harm the embryos? Not at all! Multiple studies have shown that laser-assisted hatching is actually better than chemical methods. It helps embryos develop into the blastocyst stage more effectively. Plus, the laser-assisted biopsy for PGD doesn’t seem to negatively impact embryo development either. Safety is our top priority, and our new laser system comes with built-in safety features to ensure everything is as gentle as possible.

Our lab team is currently training with laser experts to make sure we’re top-notch in using this technology. They’ll have plenty of practice time to guarantee the safest and most effective techniques when working with embryos.
