Egg Donation: Was It Worth It?

So, I wanted to share my experience with egg donation and whether I think it was worth it or not. A couple of years ago, at 25 and studying to become a physician’s assistant, I was approached about donating my eggs. I had always been open to the idea, especially since I have a family member who struggled with infertility.

During the application process, I was asked a bunch of personal questions, including one about how I handle conflict. I said something along the lines of: I confront issues head-on, believe in compromise, and value peace over pride. I thought it was neat that families wanted to know me on a deeper level.

A few months later, I got the call. A couple had chosen me to be their egg donor and wanted to meet. While it’s not a requirement for donors to meet the recipients, I was curious and open to it.

Walking into that meeting, my heart raced with excitement and nerves. They were just as anxious. When they told me that my response about conflict resonated with one of them — it was like a light bulb moment for me. The other partner worked in the medical field too, so we hit it off!

Meeting them was emotional. They expressed how grateful they were, saying, “You have no idea what you’re doing for us.” That moment helped me explain to some friends who thought I was crazy for donating. They questioned how I’d feel about having biological children out there. To me, it felt less intense than carrying a baby for someone; I was just sharing my extra eggs. I joked, “I think it could make the world a better place!”

Of course, I had my worries. Would this affect my fertility? (After some research, I concluded it was unlikely.) Would the egg retrieval hurt? (I experienced mild cramping, but it was manageable.) There were some downsides, like bloating from hormone injections, but the actual procedure was quick — about 30 minutes, and I was back on my feet the next day.

All my concerns were put to rest by the amazing team I worked with. They made the process feel comfortable, even though it was a bit out of the ordinary. Plus, I received $10,000, which I decided to put toward my student loans.

In hindsight, I’m just wishing the best for the couple. Meeting them shifted my perspective entirely. It really hit home how meaningful it is to help someone achieve their dream of parenthood.
