Dr. Mia Johnson, from our office in New York, is excited to share her journey.
I can still recall my first IVF cycle back in 1996. The patient was a remarkable woman, full of hope, and I remember every detail about her care. As a new physician fresh from my fellowship, I felt a wave of anxiety about the faith patients place in us. Would I measure up? Why would they choose me over a more seasoned doctor?
This particular patient, at age 35, had endured several unsuccessful IUIs. Choosing to move to IVF was a significant step, especially back then, when the success rates were lower and the complexities of embryo transfers were daunting. Despite the challenges, she trusted my guidance and embarked on her IVF journey. With only four doctors and three clinics at the time, it was common for us to handle our own retrievals and transfers. I put on my best confident face as we transferred two embryos on day three.
As the days passed leading up to her pregnancy test, I continued seeing patients, but the anticipation for her results was palpable. When we finally got that positive result, I could hardly contain my excitement. Seeing those twins on the ultrasound made me fist-pump in celebration!
So much has transformed in the years since my first IVF success, but one thing remains constant: every afternoon, when I check the day’s results in our system, I still feel that thrill with every pregnancy test. I’ve celebrated countless victories, and I feel privileged to accompany each patient on their extraordinary journey.
