When we hear the term “donation,” we often think of giving something for free. The definition from Merriam-Webster defines it as something you give to help others, like money or food. So why do egg donors receive compensation? This leads many women to wonder, “Can I sell my eggs?”

Can I Sell My Eggs?

The straightforward answer is no. Women who donate their eggs are actually giving them to another couple anonymously. However, egg donors are compensated for their time and the effort involved in the process—not for the eggs themselves.

At our facility, egg donors and recipients do not have any contact, and once the eggs are retrieved, the donor does not learn about the outcome of her donation.

The Commitment Involved for Egg Donors

Becoming an egg donor requires a significant time commitment. On average, the process takes about 4 to 6 months and includes an extensive screening process. This involves a detailed application, a visit from a social worker, taking time off work, and making lifestyle changes to prepare for the egg donation. Donors typically attend 10 to 12 early morning monitoring appointments, take injectable medications to stimulate egg production, and undergo a surgical retrieval procedure.

Essentially, egg donors go through a similar process as those undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), but with adjusted medication dosages. During this time, they need to be careful about their activities, avoiding intense exercise, alcohol, smoking, and sexual intercourse.

Inside the Egg Donation Experience

Interestingly, despite the compensation, many women choose to donate eggs for altruistic reasons—wanting to help families grow. One donor, Emily, shared, “I had no idea I could get paid when I donated for the first time. To me, donation is about helping others, not about the money.”
