Every year, passionate individuals from the infertility community gather in Washington, D.C. for Advocacy Day, organized by RESOLVE, The National Fertility Association. It’s an opportunity for people affected by infertility to speak out on important legislative matters that impact the lives of the 1 in 8 couples facing these challenges. This year, we saw a record turnout with over 246 advocates from 30 states, including a team of dedicated staff and patients.
Highlights from Advocacy Day
One of the highlights was a powerful speech by Congressman Mark Johnson, who shared his own journey with infertility and IVF. He reminded us all that our challenges shape who we become and inspired many in the room to carry the torch for this cause.
Key Issues Discussed
Among the key issues discussed was the Women Veterans and Families Health Services Act, a bill aimed at securing permanent access to reproductive treatments for veterans injured while serving. It’s crucial that we continue to push for comprehensive coverage, especially for those who have sacrificed so much.
We also focused on the importance of keeping the Adoption Tax Credit intact, which has been vital for families looking to adopt. The current tax reform discussions threaten this credit, so we advocated for its preservation and for the advancement of the Adoption Tax Credit Refundability Act. This change would make it easier for lower-income families to afford the adoption process.
Emerging Concerns
New to the agenda this year were discussions about Personhood bills that could jeopardize IVF and fertility treatments. We emphasized the need for awareness and education around these proposals, as they could have serious implications for those seeking to build their families.
As Dr. Emily Parker, one of our advocates, expressed, “There’s something incredibly empowering about standing up for your rights and the rights of others.” It’s inspiring to see so many people come together to advocate for a basic human right: the right to have a family.
