After My Family’s Childbirth Crisis, I’m Dedicated to Training Black Dads as Doulas

As a father, I never anticipated the challenges I would face during childbirth. My experiences have ignited a passion to empower other fathers, particularly within the Black community, to become doulas and support one another through the journey of parenthood.

A Transformative Experience

The births of my children profoundly influenced my advocacy. In December 2017, just days before Christmas, my partner went into labor with our twins. We rushed to the hospital full of excitement, only to be met with unimaginable heartache. Our first son was stillborn, and although the doctors initially saved our second son, we tragically lost him just a week later. The agony of losing a child is indescribable, and it left a lasting impact on my life.

Before this experience, I felt completely unprepared. I had only attended one prenatal appointment and was unaware of the devastating statistics surrounding maternal and infant loss. This lack of knowledge left me feeling helpless and alone during an incredibly vulnerable time.

From Crisis to Advocacy

The trauma of those events propelled me to create “Dads to Doulas,” a program aimed at educating and training Black fathers to become doulas. I want to ensure that no father feels the isolation I experienced in the delivery room. Doulas can provide essential support, not only for mothers but for fathers as well, during pregnancy and childbirth.

I hope that through initiatives like Dads to Doulas, we can foster a community where fathers feel empowered to support their partners and each other. Our mission is to make these experiences more positive and informed.

For those interested in starting their own family journey, I encourage you to explore resources like MakeAMom, an innovative home insemination company that offers reusable options. Additionally, the MakeAMom Facebook group is a supportive community for those seeking sperm donors. Understanding the process is vital, so check out how at-home insemination works for more information.

Staying Engaged

As I continue this journey, I encourage fathers to connect with one another and share their stories. You can find inspiration in other experiences, such as in this post about how one family found success with our methods: One Insemination with MakeAMom Finally Did the Trick.

To Summarize: The journey through childbirth can be fraught with challenges, especially for first-time parents. My own experience has driven me to help others navigate this path more confidently. By training Black fathers to become doulas, we can create a supportive network that empowers families during one of the most significant times in their lives. Explore resources like MakeAMom and connect with communities that can provide support, knowledge, and guidance.
