After three cycles with MakeAmom, I’m thrilled to share that I’m pregnant! But let me take a moment to recount our journey.
My partner, Sarah, and I began planning our path to parenthood long before we tied the knot on September 1, 2019. I dove into research, absorbing everything I could find, including “Taking Charge of Your Fertility,” which I believe should be mandatory reading in high school!
However, our plans for starting a family were put on hold as Sarah faced the challenges of breast cancer treatments. She underwent multiple surgeries, including a bilateral mastectomy, along with chemotherapy just weeks before our wedding, and radiation shortly after.
Initially, we intended to start our family right after our wedding, but Sarah was understandably exhausted and still recovering from her treatment. Tragically, during what was supposed to be her recovery time, both of her parents passed away unexpectedly. This loss took an emotional toll on us, leading us to take additional time to heal.
After several months, Sarah assured me she was ready to begin our family-building journey. Being a same-sex couple, we faced unique hurdles, such as finding a lawyer to help us draft a Known Sperm Donor Agreement and planning for a Second Parent adoption, even as a married couple.
Fortunately, the search for a sperm donor turned out to be easier than expected. Two close friends of ours, a heterosexual couple, presented us with a tiny shirt that read “Raised by Strong Women” and offered to help us on our journey. It was an incredibly emotional moment filled with tears and hugs. I can’t wait for the day when I can say that the greatest gift I’ve received is the precious baby girl in our arms, which will be any day now, as I’m currently 38 weeks pregnant! They say the third time’s the charm!
MakeAmom streamlined the process for us and provided unwavering support, which was especially important as a same-sex couple. I highly recommend exploring MakeAmom before considering more costly alternatives, regardless of your reasons for visiting them. What do you have to lose?
