Living in California, it’s easy to take for granted the wide array of fertility treatments available to us. However, in places like Japan, the reality is quite different. While IVF is recognized as a standard infertility treatment there, it comes with stringent restrictions. For instance, IVF is only permissible for legally married couples, and the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology has limited the approval of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to just one case so far. Although discussions about egg donation programs are ongoing, proposed guidelines by the same governing body make it nearly impossible to establish a functioning program. Surrogacy remains illegal altogether.
Frustrated by these limitations, many Japanese couples are turning to international options. Some travel over nine hours from Tokyo to California, hoping to realize their dreams of parenthood. This is where the Global Fertility Center (GFC) plays a crucial role. Since 1997, GFC has partnered with our clinic to assist Japanese couples on their fertility journeys. They keep clients informed about the services we offer, prepare their medical histories in English, and provide transportation. GFC staff attend all patient appointments, offering translation and support throughout the IVF process, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our IVF coordinator, Janet.
We’ve noticed that many clients arrive at GFC after undergoing numerous unsuccessful IVF cycles—often as many as 20 or more. Sadly, many of these patients could have benefited from egg donation, which is simply unavailable in Japan. They cling to the hope that their next cycle will be the one, only to stop when a doctor advises them they’re too old.
What stands out about our collaboration is the unwavering support we provide. Our physicians, nurses, and embryologists go above and beyond to ensure that patients feel comfortable while receiving top-notch medical care. GFC had the option of collaborating with any fertility specialist in the Bay Area, and our collective experience has been nothing short of exceptional. The partnership is characterized by ethical practices, honesty, and warmth, setting a standard for reproductive medicine’s future in Japan.
As the director of GFC, I’ve had the privilege of sharing our collaborative success at various medical conferences in Japan, including key events like the IVF Conference and the Ethics Committee of the Japan Fertilization and Implantation Society. The impact of our work has been published in Japanese OB/GYN journals, and I’ve been featured in several media outlets. Together with our patients, we’ve created happy families who fondly remember San Francisco as the place where their dreams took flight. They promise to return with their children one day to celebrate the beginning of their new lives.
While the U.S. continues to navigate complex issues related to reproductive health, advanced fertility technologies remain widely accessible. Other nations may not offer the same level of quality or variety in treatment options. For instance, recent laws in Scotland have eliminated donor anonymity, leading to significant delays for couples seeking sperm or egg donations. Similarly, regulations across the European Union restrict compensation for egg donors, resulting in long wait times. In Australia, non-married individuals and same-sex couples are still fighting for their right to fertility treatments. Meanwhile, stringent laws in Italy prohibit egg and sperm donation entirely.

Together, we strive to provide comprehensive support and cutting-edge care for couples pursuing parenthood, regardless of the hurdles they face in their home countries.
