Hey there! I’m Dr. Jamie Lawson, and I want to share a bit about my path in medicine, specifically in reproductive health. My journey began in the vibrant city of San Francisco, a place that has shaped both my personal and professional life. After finishing college, I headed back home to the University of Florida, where I earned my Master’s in Environmental Engineering before moving on to obtain my medical degree. That made me the fourth generation in my family to become a physician!
I kicked off my medical career as an intern in Obstetrics and Gynecology at a fantastic program in St. Louis. It was there that I met some amazing friends and colleagues, including my future partner, Laura. After that year, I moved to Nashville to finish my residency and fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where Laura and I worked side by side—she was a nurse-midwife, and I was a resident. After welcoming our first child, Laura transitioned into community health programs while I dove into my fellowship.
Once I completed my fellowship, I became part of the teaching faculty at Vanderbilt, taking on the role of Director of the Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility Division. Early in my career, I was lucky enough to engage in groundbreaking work, including using the first laser laparoscope and contributing to one of the first assisted reproductive technology (ART) programs in the U.S. I wrote several pioneering articles on endoscopic surgery and IVF, laying the groundwork for future advancements.
In 1990, I was invited to join a new clinic in San Francisco as its Medical Director. However, driven by the desire to implement my own ideas about patient care, I soon partnered with others to establish the San Francisco Reproductive Health Center. Through teamwork and dedication, we became a top destination for infertility and ART services in Northern California. Fast forward to 1999, when I collaborated with other esteemed colleagues to take over the management of our current clinic. We aimed to create a center of excellence that emphasized clinical research while focusing on patient-centered services—what we have today truly reflects our collective vision.
Having spent years in the field, I’ve developed a keen interest in the ethical considerations that arise with advancements in reproductive technology. This passion has led me to join the Society for Humanism in Medicine and even speak at events addressing the ethical complexities associated with children conceived through these technologies.
When I’m not immersed in work, you can find me exploring the world, enjoying a fine bottle of wine, listening to contemporary jazz, or appreciating unique art pieces. I’ve also developed a fascination with egg-themed art, which you might notice scattered throughout our office. I’m a proud father to two amazing daughters, Emma and Lily, and I approach each day with optimism, hoping for it to be even better than the last.
