Hey there, friends!
I’m Lily Carter, a Senior Embryologist, and I wanted to share a bit of my journey with you. Thirteen years ago, I made the big move from Atlanta to San Francisco. Honestly, leaving everything I knew behind was a bit scary, but it turned out to be one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life.
From Veterinary Dreams to Reproductive Science
My road to Assisted Reproductive Technology was quite an adventure. I started at the University of Georgia with dreams of becoming a vet. After spending summers helping out with animals, I realized I wanted a career that focused more on research. This led me to earn my Master’s in Reproductive Physiology in 1995 and then a PhD in the same field by 1999 at North Carolina State University.
During my grad studies, while researching IVF in various animals like cows and pigs, I became aware of the infertility challenges humans face too. Even though I enjoyed teaching, I didn’t want to be stuck in a classroom forever. So, I started looking for ways to combine my love for research, science, and reproduction. I posted my CV online and, lucky me, Joe Conaghan reached out to me, which kicked off my journey here.
My Role in the IVF Lab
At my current workplace, I’ve become skilled in handling human embryos and various lab techniques that help hopeful parents achieve their dreams. I received my licenses as a Technical Supervisor and High Complexity Clinical Lab Director in 2002 and 2004, which means I’m qualified to run my own IVF lab someday!
Exciting Experiences in the Field
Now, as a senior embryologist, I wear many hats. I’m involved in IVF lab inspections, conferences, and even external research projects. One of my most thrilling experiences was in 2011 at a marine park where I helped analyze dolphin semen. Yes, you read that right! After a hard day’s work, we got to hang out with the dolphins and learn how they stay hydrated with ice pellets and cold jello. I formed a bond with a dolphin named Max, who was just a joy to be around. I also met a lovely orca named Bella before she moved to San Diego.
A Rewarding Career
I genuinely love what I do and the amazing team I get to work with every day. Helping an egg become an embryo and eventually a baby is incredibly rewarding. I couldn’t imagine a more fulfilling career!
