In 1990, Jake and Sarah met and soon tied the knot at the ages of 22 and 28. Just after their wedding, the couple made the big move from South Africa to the U.S. They cherished their time together for four years before deciding to start a family. Sarah, who was working at the clinic, began to worry about the possibility of infertility after learning about it through her job. After a year of trying to conceive, they sensed that something wasn’t right. When Sarah asked Dr. Sam Thompson for a recommendation for a reproductive endocrinologist, he replied, “Why not me?” And just like that, their fertility adventure began.
With their diagnosis in hand, they jumped straight into IVF, which simplified things a bit. Unfortunately, the first attempt didn’t yield the outcome they hoped for. However, their persistence paid off with a second IVF cycle, leading to the exciting news of expecting twins! After 34 weeks, they welcomed a beautiful boy and girl into their lives.
The whirlwind of raising twins was at times overwhelming, and Sarah often felt she couldn’t fully enjoy those early moments. Yet, her desire for another child didn’t wane. After six years of gentle persuasion, Jake finally agreed to try again, on the condition that they would only transfer one blastocyst embryo this time. Thankfully, they achieved pregnancy once more and welcomed a lovely little girl, proving that sometimes, a little patience is all it takes!
Today, Sarah still works at the clinic as a New Patient Center Liaison, where she candidly shares her experiences with patients. She often tells them that having twins isn’t as glamorous as it sounds, even though she wouldn’t trade them for anything. It’s hard to believe that soon, the twins will be off to college! Jake and Sarah are incredibly grateful they decided to pursue fertility treatments one last time and will relish having their youngest at home for the coming years.
