We are thrilled to introduce a new physician to our practice – Dr. Jamie Carter. Starting next week, Dr. Carter will be seeing patients at our Washington, DC office. You may have already spotted her during her orientation and training in our Rockville and DC locations, but here’s a deeper dive into her journey.
Dr. Jamie Carter’s Unique Path to Medicine
Dr. Jamie Carter’s journey to becoming a physician is anything but conventional. She earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Maryland before heading to New York City, where she embarked on a career in the fashion industry. Labeling herself a “jack-of-all-trades,” Dr. Carter was involved in managing finances and working with buyers for a prominent fashion brand. However, after a few years, she realized that her role lacked the challenge and fulfillment she sought, prompting her to return to school. She completed the necessary science prerequisites and enrolled at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
With a strong passion for women’s health, Dr. Carter found her calling in obstetrics and gynecology. Her interest in reproductive endocrinology was sparked during her residency, particularly after attending a compelling lecture on fertility by Dr. Mark Thompson, a leading figure in the field. Coincidentally, her chief resident at the time, Dr. Lisa Greene, was also inspired to pursue a career in infertility medicine after that lecture.
Dr. Carter and Dr. Thompson maintained their connection throughout her fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the National Institutes of Health, where she contributed to various research projects. This collaboration makes her an excellent fit for our team.
Dr. Jamie Carter’s Philosophy on Infertility
Dr. Carter is eager to start seeing patients at our K St. location in Washington, DC. She emphasizes the importance of open communication and honesty in her practice. “I believe that understanding the ‘why’ behind a patient’s situation is crucial,” she explains. “My approach involves explaining the process to patients, rather than just instructing them on what to do.”
When asked for a piece of advice for those facing infertility, Dr. Carter encourages, “Avoid labeling or limiting yourself. With the advancements in treatment options, we can help nearly everyone conceive after a thorough fertility evaluation.”
Life Beyond the Clinic
Originally from Silver Spring, MD, Dr. Carter has maintained her local ties. She frequently visits her hometown, where she and her partner enjoy hiking and exploring the outdoors. Dr. Carter has a lifelong goal of visiting every continent; she recently ticked Australia off her list and now only has Asia and Antarctica to go!
