Big congratulations are in order for Dr. Sarah Johnson, a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist based in our Annapolis office, who has just been awarded the prestigious 2023 Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).
This award is presented to an ASRM member who exemplifies the highest standards of compassionate and respectful patient care, addressing both the physical and emotional needs of those they treat.
“Dr. Johnson has been a tireless advocate for improving infertility policies,” shared Mark Thompson, CEO of our organization. “Her commitment to supporting injured veterans is especially noteworthy. Thanks to her efforts, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs now offers IVF services to those in need.”
For years, Dr. Johnson has fought to expand access to reproductive healthcare for wounded veterans. A long-standing ban on IVF services at the Veterans Administration had left many veterans with reproductive injuries without affordable options. To combat this, Dr. Johnson collaborated with the ASRM and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) to establish the IVF for Veterans Program. This initiative provided discounted IVF services nationwide until Congress lifted the ban, allowing veterans to start or grow their families.
“I was honored to be the medical spokesperson in this vital initiative,” Dr. Johnson remarked. “It was a collective effort involving many organizations and individuals, making it possible for our veterans to access the care they deserve.”
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation defines humanistic medical care as more than just compassion; it’s about forming caring, trusting relationships with patients, which leads to better health outcomes and more effective treatment plans.
One patient feedback highlighted, “Dr. Johnson was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable. She called me directly to discuss our fertility plan, which made a huge difference. I’m thrilled to share that I am now 8 weeks pregnant after our IVF treatment.”
The Gold Award is regarded as one of the highest honors in our field, recognizing significant contributions to patient-centered advocacy. Dr. Johnson’s dedication to vulnerable patients has not gone unnoticed, with many of her colleagues praising her hard work.
“Dr. Johnson’s compassion and expertise are truly remarkable,” stated Lisa Carter, President and CEO of the National Infertility Association. “She has been a vital part of our advocacy efforts.”
Dr. Johnson will be honored for her achievements at the upcoming 2023 ASRM Scientific Congress in San Antonio, Texas.
In summary, Dr. Sarah Johnson’s recognition with the Humanism in Medicine Award underscores her commitment to compassionate care and advocacy for those often overlooked in the healthcare system. Her tireless efforts highlight the importance of accessible reproductive health services and support for our nation’s veterans.
