Meet Emma and Jake, a couple from Southampton who faced a challenging journey while trying to start their family. After more than five years of trying to conceive, they were referred to Wessex Fertility for treatment. After numerous tests and treatments, they were overjoyed to find out they were expecting after just their first round of IVF and ICSI, welcoming their precious daughter, Ava, into the world.
A Love Story with a Twist
Emma, 30, was pursuing her teaching career in Southampton when she met Jake, 36, who worked as a bartender. “We hit it off right away and ended up tying the knot in 2014,” Emma reminisces. Eager to begin their family, the couple didn’t want to delay. “The same year we got married, I lost my father. It was a mix of joy and heartache that pushed me to realize how unpredictable life can be; we wanted to seize every moment,” Emma reflects.
Facing Challenges
Knowing about Emma’s polycystic ovary syndrome, they consulted a specialist at their local hospital. “I underwent several tests and even ovarian drilling to stimulate ovulation. They advised me to maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep trying for a year,” she explains. After a year of heartache and hope, they returned to the hospital for another round of tests. “Walking through the maternity ward was tough; I felt so happy for the new moms, but I couldn’t help but wish it was me,” Emma recalls.
The couple learned they could receive NHS funding but were advised that Emma needed to lower her BMI to qualify. “I was determined and managed to shed over 4 stones! It was a struggle, especially when I was so close but just shy of the target. But eventually, I made it,” Emma shares.
Finding the Right Clinic
Next, they explored local fertility clinics and stumbled upon Wessex Fertility. “We took a tour and felt instantly comfortable; it didn’t feel clinical or intimidating. After attending an information evening, we knew this was the place for us,” Emma remembers. Once their funding was approved, they were referred to the clinic, where Dr. Lisa Harrington suggested an antagonist cycle of IVF.
Things progressed quickly! Since Emma worked in Southampton, they could alternate between the Southampton and Basingstoke clinics, making it more convenient for them. On the day of egg retrieval, they were thrilled to learn that nine eggs had been harvested, which were then injected with Jake’s sperm using ICSI. “Out of the nine, seven developed into embryos. We transferred one and froze the other six,” Emma explains.
The Waiting Game
The two-week wait to know if treatment had worked was nerve-wracking. “We tried to keep things normal, juggling work and time with friends. My colleagues knew about my treatment, which added some pressure. But we were open with our family and friends, who were incredibly supportive,” Emma says.
When test day arrived, the couple took the morning off work. “We couldn’t sleep, we were so anxious! We kept our test day a secret from everyone else. When I took the test and saw that it was positive, we were overwhelmed with joy and disbelief!” Emma recalls.
First Scans and New Connections
They had two early scans at Wessex, where Emma connected with other couples just starting their journeys. “I looked around and thought, ‘I know exactly what you’re feeling.’ Seeing our baby’s heartbeat was an unforgettable moment, a beautiful way to conclude our journey with Wessex Fertility,” she shares.
Ava’s Arrival
On November 30, 2019, exactly one year after receiving NHS funding, Emma gave birth to their beautiful baby girl, Ava, who weighed 6lb 1oz. “Ava’s arrival was quick and a bit chaotic! Jake was emotional, and I was in shock! That first skin-to-skin contact and feeling her latch on was indescribable,” Emma reflects.
Advice for Others
“Since then, we’ve already suggested Wessex to friends going through similar experiences. It truly felt like a home away from home, with a strong support network,” they express. Emma advises anyone going through treatment to lean on their loved ones for support. “It’s essential to have a good network. Don’t forget your partner’s feelings either. Sometimes, it felt like Jake was left to manage things alone,” Emma adds. “Taking it one step at a time while keeping the big picture in mind helped us a lot.”
