Infertility affects about 7% of men, and if you’ve been trying to conceive for some time, or simply want to learn more about your fertility, a semen analysis is a common assessment that evaluates both the quantity and quality of sperm.
What is Semen Analysis?
The primary reason for male infertility often lies in sperm abnormalities. A semen analysis allows us to evaluate:
- The chances of achieving pregnancy with your partner
- The most suitable treatment options for you both
- Any sperm issues that might need medical assistance to conceive
What Does the Semen Analysis Check?
We follow World Health Organization guidelines for our semen analyses. During this assessment, we examine the sample’s volume and pH, along with:
- Sperm Density: This measures the number of sperm in your sample. A low sperm count, known as Oligozoospermia, can hinder natural fertilization during intercourse.
- Sperm Motility: This indicates how well your sperm can swim. Poor motility, termed Asthenozoospermia, means the sperm may struggle to reach the egg without help.
- Sperm Morphology: This assesses the size and shape of your sperm. A low percentage of normally shaped sperm is referred to as Teratozoospermia, which can affect the sperm’s ability to penetrate the egg. While we usually need just one sample, we may ask for a repeat if we see anything unusual.
What to Expect from the Semen Analysis Process
To get started, you will need to provide a fresh sample. You can do this at one of our clinics or in the comfort of your home. If you choose the clinic, you’ll have access to a private room and clear instructions on what to do with your sample. If you opt to collect the sample at home, please remember to:
- Use the provided container from TFP Fertility
- Keep the sample at a stable temperature
- Deliver it to our lab within an hour of collection
After the analysis, we’ll schedule a consultation to discuss the results and recommend any treatments that could help.
How Much Does a Semen Analysis Cost?
The cost for a semen analysis is £205. For more details about pricing, treatment packages, and payment options, check out your local TFP Fertility clinic page.
