Did you know that a whopping 70% of pregnant women are on at least one prescribed medication? And about 90% take some form of medication during their pregnancy? So, how do you figure out if these meds are safe for an expecting mom? This is where our Teratogen Information Specialists (TIS) come into play! These experts are dedicated to answering questions about the potential risks associated with both over-the-counter and prescription medications, as well as other exposures.

A teratogen refers to anything that might increase the likelihood of birth defects or complications such as low birth weight or premature delivery when a woman is pregnant. To become a TIS, one must undergo specialized training to effectively address inquiries from healthcare providers, expectant mothers, their partners, and even prospective adoptive parents. We receive calls from individuals of all ages, from teens to grandparents! Our specialists are trained to assess questions, summarize relevant data, and communicate it clearly. Each inquiry is unique, making every day at BabyConnect a new adventure for our team.

Unlike genetic counselors or obstetricians, we typically don’t focus on family history or provide direct recommendations. Instead, we aim to provide reassurance and share the latest information on exposures. We weigh the effects of taking versus not taking a medication, herbal supplement, or OTC drug, especially in sensitive situations like planning for pregnancy, navigating an unexpected pregnancy, or dealing with health issues.

We frequently hear from prospective adoptive parents who may have just 36 hours to decide about accepting a baby whose biological mother used substances like heroin or alcohol during pregnancy. We also chat with expectant mothers who are anxious about alcohol or marijuana use before they knew they were pregnant. Recent hot topics include inquiries about the Zika virus during honeymoons and concerns about COVID-19 vaccines during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Our TIS team is also there for those facing surgery while pregnant or dealing with pain management, and we often clarify outdated practices like “pump and dump” after certain medical procedures. Many women reach out to us repeatedly for our reliable guidance. We’re here to help with breastfeeding inquiries, medication safety, and managing health conditions while pregnant or postpartum. Some conversations can be emotional, especially for those with a history of complications or high-risk pregnancies, and that’s perfectly okay.

We emphasize the importance of weighing the benefits of medication against potential risks to both the mother and baby. It’s crucial for parents to consider the long-term implications of their choices, as they will be making similar decisions for the next couple of decades. Involving partners and healthcare providers in these discussions is vital.

At BabyConnect, we’re honored to be part of the journeys of so many individuals seeking information. We recognize the diverse backgrounds and experiences of those who reach out to us. With 12 affiliate offices throughout the U.S. and one in Canada, we provide support via phone, text, email, and live chat, ensuring quick responses across time zones. Our multi-disciplinary team includes genetic counselors, nurses, and public health experts, and we also offer services in Spanish. Annual training and regular discussions about new research keep us informed and ready to assist.
