My partner and I began our journey to parenthood in December 2020. Fast forward to August 2021, when I was diagnosed with PCOS. Struggling with weight loss my whole life, my doctor recommended I lose some pounds before considering medications like letrozole or clomid. After shedding about 40 lbs, I returned to my doctor in September 2022, nearly two years into trying to conceive. To my surprise, she told me I was ovulating on my own and didn’t need any ovulation medications.
We decided to keep trying naturally for about another year, as my doctor didn’t present us with further options. By September 2023, we were tired of waiting and wanted action, so we visited a fertility clinic. After undergoing an HSG and a saline sonogram, both tests came back normal with no blockages or polyps. My bloodwork and my partner’s semen analysis were also clear. The clinic suggested we start with timed intercourse using letrozole to induce ovulation. We gave it a shot in December 2023, and while I did ovulate, we didn’t conceive.
Ready to move on to IUI, we decided to attempt one or two more medicated cycles since IUI can be quite pricey. I had seen some success stories about at-home insemination and thought it might be worth a try. Since I was already ovulating with the medication, we opted for an at-home kit as a more budget-friendly choice. To our amazement, we conceived on the first attempt during our second medicated cycle. Huge thanks to the home insemination kit!

In summary, after a long journey filled with ups and downs, we found a practical and affordable alternative to IUI that led us to the joyful news of conception. It just goes to show that with perseverance, there are often unexpected paths to achieving your dreams of parenthood.
