Cancer and Loss Didn’t Deter This Amazing Couple from Achieving a BFP

However, our plans for starting a family were postponed as Emma faced breast cancer treatments, including a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy just weeks before our wedding, and then radiation afterward. While I had envisioned us starting our family right after saying “I do,” Emma was understandably exhausted and recovering from her treatments, so we decided to hold off.

Unfortunately, during her recovery, we faced the heartbreaking loss of both her parents, which added to the emotional strain. We took additional time to heal and regroup. A few months later, Emma expressed that she was ready to begin our family journey. However, as a same-sex couple, we encountered some extra hurdles to navigate.

We sought the help of a lawyer to create a Known Sperm Donor Agreement and to plan for second-parent adoption, even though we were married. Thankfully, finding a sperm donor turned out to be a beautiful experience when two of our closest friends, a straight couple, surprised us with a tiny shirt that read “Raised by Strong Women.” They graciously offered to help us start our family, and I can’t tell you how many tears of joy were shed that day. I’m beyond excited for the day I can say that the greatest gift I’ve received is my precious baby girl, who will be in our arms any day now—I’m currently 38 weeks pregnant! They say the third time’s the charm, and I couldn’t agree more.

This experience has been made easier with the right tools and support. I highly recommend exploring options like at-home insemination kits before considering more expensive alternatives.
