After a challenging year in lockdown due to Covid-19, we, a same-sex couple, decided at the end of 2020 that we were ready to expand our family. Being cooped up for three months made us eager to embrace life, one baby-making attempt at a time!

As part of the LGBTQ+ community, our options were extensive—from clinical IVF to at-home insemination. However, choosing a donor was more complex. Should we rely on family, friends, or seek an unknown donor? The search for the right person took us on quite a journey, but we finally found our perfect match, who was thrilled to help us grow our family.

In preparation, we invested in an ovulation tracking device, an at-home insemination kit, and sought some legal advice. After diving into research, we knew we’d need to rely on trial and error to figure things out. Our first attempt was dubbed our “practice run”—though unsuccessful, it provided valuable insights and tips.

When round two approached, we were filled with excitement and hope. After several days of home insemination, the moment of truth arrived for our first pregnancy test. To our amazement, our second attempt was a success! We are now on our way to welcoming our very first “home-made, same-sex” baby.
