In October 2011, Alex and Jamie met and quickly became inseparable friends over the next four and a half years. They talked about everything, including their dreams of having a family someday. At the time, Alex was still presenting as female and never envisioned having children herself, even though she adored kids. She thought, as long as her future partner wanted children, she’d be on board. In 2015, Alex revealed to Jamie that she was transgender and wanted to begin her transition. Jamie fully supported her, and their bond grew stronger. They started dating in March 2016, and it was clear that marriage and family were on the horizon.
As they discussed their future, they explored the idea of using a sperm bank in California but quickly realized it would cost them a fortune—tens of thousands of dollars they simply didn’t have. After getting engaged in October 2016 and marrying in May 2018, they decided to ask a mutual friend, Ryan, to be their sperm donor. Ryan agreed in January of this year, but they initially planned to wait until summer to start trying for a baby. After some soul-searching, they realized that there’s never a perfect time to have kids, and with Jamie’s lifelong dream of motherhood in mind, Alex decided to surprise her with an insemination kit right after Ryan’s agreement.
They followed the instructions almost perfectly, except for using only one syringe during their insemination on January 15. Alex had a good feeling about it, but Jamie was skeptical, given the low chances of success, particularly with just one syringe. Life was busy for everyone involved, making it hard to find the perfect moment for a second attempt. About a week and a half later, Jamie surprised Alex with the news: they were pregnant!
Now, they’re eagerly awaiting their baby’s arrival in October, with a due date that amusingly falls on Jamie’s birthday, October 7. Excitingly, they learned they’re having a boy! Jamie had a list of names ready since childhood, but she allowed Alex to choose the final name, which combines elements of both their names and includes Jamie’s father’s middle name. They are opting for a home water birth with midwives, and so far, everything has gone smoothly. While Jamie struggled with nausea during her first trimester, she has since regained weight and is enjoying a healthy pregnancy, with their baby boy measuring ahead of schedule.
The couple is incredibly grateful for the home insemination kit, as it made their dream of parenthood accessible without the exorbitant costs of sperm banks. They feel confident they will be fantastic parents and are excited about this next chapter in their lives.
