When Sarah and I decided to start our family, the thought of IVF or even IUI was pretty daunting—let’s be honest, it costs a fortune! One day while driving, I glanced at Sarah and suggested, “What if we tried at home?” That sparked a Google search and led us on a journey we never expected!
We were fortunate enough to have a friend offer to donate sperm, a luxury not everyone has. Once he was on board with our plan (fresh deposit at home, please!), we were ready to roll. We tried four times with no success. After some fertility testing, my results weren’t great, but we were determined to keep going. Unfortunately, our donor also had to share some disappointing news: his sperm quality had decreased, and the doctor advised us that IVF was our only option. I was absolutely heartbroken.
Just when we were losing hope, our donor’s brother stepped in to help! We couldn’t believe our luck. We tried three more times, but still no joy. I had resigned myself to the idea of IVF and started preparing for that route. However, I asked the doctor for one last attempt using a medicated cycle, which I had been hesitant about. They prescribed Letrozole, but warned me that my body might not respond well. I also started seeing an acupuncturist who specialized in fertility because I wanted to explore every avenue possible!
During my ultrasound before the trigger shot, we saw three follicles—two looking good and one not-so-great. The doctor suggested IUI, but I wanted to stick to our home plan! We inseminated for the eighth time right before the Covid-19 lockdown began in California. Suddenly, I had 16 long days to wait until I could test. I made it to the 14th day before testing and—wow!—immediately saw a positive result. I couldn’t believe my eyes; I honestly thought I’d never see that!
At my first ultrasound at 7.5 weeks, the doctor began with, “Well, there’s two! It’s twins.” Sarah was on FaceTime, and her expression was priceless. I started laughing with joy—we were finally having two babies! Fast forward to my C-Section: we went in expecting twins but left with three beautiful girls! The third baby had been hiding for 35.5 weeks. Pure shock!
We love sharing our story because people often assume we went through IVF. The girls are doing great now and are 5 weeks old. We are so in love with our family!
Did you face any obstacles?
Unexplained infertility. How long were you trying before this home insemination method? We tried 8 inseminations over 2 years. How many cycles did you use? 8.
Sarah and I have to say, your journey had our little team smiling from ear to ear! Congratulations on the arrival of those three beautiful girls! We are thrilled to have played a part in your story and hope it brings inspiration to others.
