This month marks the launch of the highly anticipated ’90s Tour, featuring an impressive lineup of hip-hop and R&B legends from the decade. Artists like Ice Cream, Spice-N-Pepper, Biz Market, Color Me Rad, All-4-One, Rob Base, Tone Lōc, Young MC, and Kool Moe Dee will grace the stage, taking us back to our teenage years. Initially, the tour started with only a few scheduled dates, but its overwhelming popularity led to the addition of numerous stops across the country.
“It feels like we’re transporting people back to a joyful time in their lives,” shared Jasmine “Pepper” White of Spice-N-Pepper in an interview. “It’s like one enormous celebration of the ’90s.” And she’s spot on; those years were filled with simpler pleasures—before responsibilities like marriage, parenting, and careers took over—when we were just kids enjoying our favorite tunes, films, and TV shows. This tour is a beautiful reminder of those cherished times.
Memorable Moments from the ’90s
One show that stands out from the ’90s is Beverly Hills 90210, where Color Me Rad made a guest appearance. The episode portrayed Donna discovering her mother’s infidelity, while Brenda and Kelly embarked on a quest to locate the band and cheer her up. Their unforgettable performance of “Dream On” at the Peach Pit is a moment etched in our memories.
And who can forget the unforgettable Vanilla Ice? He not only revived the pompadour hairstyle but added his unique flair with a striking two-tone color. We all sneaked out to theaters to catch Cool as Ice, relishing every quotable line like, “Drop that zero and get with the hero.” Despite some criticism over his middle-class Florida roots, we embraced his music wholeheartedly, belting out “Ice Ice Baby” as we cruised the coastline.
The ’90s also gifted us with unforgettable party anthems, from Tone Lōc’s “Wild Thing,” which we belted out at sleepovers, to Rob Base’s “Joy and Pain,” which perfectly encapsulated the highs and lows of our teenage years.
Sharing the ’90s with a New Generation
Fast forward to today, I find myself sharing some of the more family-friendly ’90s rap with my tweens. We laugh as I attempt to sing along to Biz Market, dance the Kid ‘n Play, and reminisce about how cool we thought this music was back then. I tell my daughter about the impact of Spice-N-Pepper, a pioneering female rap group in a male-dominated industry, emphasizing that girls can achieve anything they set their minds to.
This tour offers a chance for those of us fortunate enough to snag tickets to relive those moments. For one night, we can step back into the ’90s and sing and dance to the songs that shaped our youth. The ’90s Tour will kick off on April 15 in Greenville, South Carolina, and continue through October across select cities nationwide. More details can be found here.
