Today marks National Coffee Day, and what better way to celebrate than by navigating the menu at your local coffee shop? For many of us, coffee is an essential part of our daily routine, providing not just a caffeine boost but also a momentary escape from the hustle and bustle of work. Yet, stepping into a café can sometimes feel like entering a maze of terms and options that leave us bewildered. Macchiato? Flat White? It’s enough to make anyone’s head spin. I suspect I’m not alone in feeling overwhelmed by the intricate coffee landscape, which seems to have sprouted from a certain ubiquitous coffee chain.

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a menu, heart racing because you’re not sure what to order, you’re definitely not the only one. And admit it—how many of us have hesitated to ask a barista (when did we start using this term?) what a Cortado really is? We all want to fit in, don’t we? So, let’s break it down with an easy-to-understand coffee cheat sheet for your next visit to a trendy café:

  1. Espresso: The simplest of them all. It’s a small, concentrated shot of coffee that many Europeans swear by. You might laugh at those who sip espresso from tiny cups, but one taste will show you that true coffee lovers have a special appreciation for it. Fun fact: before the 1600s, coffee drinkers in Turkey and the Arab world only consumed espresso—no milk involved.
  2. Macchiato: Think of this as espresso with a splash of foamed milk. It sounds odd, but it’s surprisingly delightful.
  3. Cortado: A revelation for many, including myself until recently! It’s simply espresso mixed with an equal amount of steamed milk. If you don’t know what steamed milk is, you’re not alone—just know it’s hot milk, but fancy!
  4. Café Americano: Legend has it that during WWII, American soldiers would dilute their espresso with hot water. The result? A drink that has now become a staple. It’s made with 1/3 espresso and 2/3 hot water. Just a heads-up, ordering this outside the U.S. might earn you some judgmental looks.
  5. Flat White: This drink originated from Australia, created by someone who wanted a new take on coffee. It’s made with one shot of espresso and steamed milk, filling up the cup. Sounds a lot like the next entry, right?
  6. Cappuccino: A bit more complicated, this drink consists of equal parts espresso, hot milk, and froth. Yes, froth and hot milk are distinct entities!
  7. Latte: Things start to get tricky here. A latte is composed of 2/3 espresso and 1/3 steamed milk, topped with milk foam. If the math is too daunting, just go for a cappuccino—you probably won’t notice the difference.
  8. Café au Lait: This French classic combines brewed coffee and steamed milk in a 1:1 ratio. Make sure not to mix it up with “white coffee,” which is served with room temperature milk or a latte.

There’s a lot more to explore in the world of coffee, from hot brewed to cold brewed, and even drip coffee. But for now, I just need a good cup of joe!
