Essential Packing List for Your Adoption Journey

Having navigated three trips to China to welcome our three children into our family, I can tell you that preparing for an adoption journey is a unique challenge. Unlike a typical vacation where you might just need some clothes and a camera, packing for an adoption trip can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to fit the essentials into a suitcase with a strict weight limit.

On our most recent trip in March 2012, my husband and I traveled with our two older sons, aged six and seven. The adventure lasted 17 days and took us through four major cities in China.

Here’s a handy formula for you to keep in mind:
17 days in a foreign country + a new child who may not speak English and likely won’t warm up to you right away x the possibility of illness – comforts of home = utter chaos!

To make our experience as smooth as possible, we prepared for every potential discomfort—trust me, it’s better to be over-prepared! Here’s what you should definitely include in your packing list:

  1. Snacks: While I enjoy sampling new cuisines, after a couple of days, I crave my familiar snacks. Think granola bars, fruit snacks, and cookies. Our picky eater led to many ramen noodle meals!
  2. Medication: Be prepared because you will get sick—it’s almost a guarantee! Pack medications for various ailments like upset stomach, headaches, and even antibiotics, just in case. Trust me, navigating a foreign pharmacy can be a daunting task.
  3. Clothing: Aim to bring enough outfits for at least five days. If it’s warm, a bathing suit is a must. Avoid purchasing fancy clothes for your new child beforehand, as sizes often differ significantly; we learned that the hard way!
  4. Gifts: It’s customary to bring gifts for various officials and caretakers, including the orphanage staff. Wrapping supplies can save time and keep things organized.
  5. Important Documents: Your paperwork and passports are crucial—don’t forget them! A Chinese-English dictionary can be handy, even if you don’t use it often.
  6. Cash: You may need a significant amount of cash for various expenses. It’s best to have this secure and accessible.
  7. Flight Essentials: Prepare for potentially long flights—ours ranged from 13 to over 24 hours! Bring entertainment, snacks, and a change of clothes in case of delays.
  8. Room Entertainment: You’ll spend a lot of time waiting in your hotel room, so pack your favorite games or devices to keep everyone entertained. Don’t forget chargers!
  9. Stroller or Carrier: This will be essential for getting around, especially in crowded places. Consider the weight limit carefully to avoid any mishaps.
  10. Love and Patience: Above all, pack an open heart. This journey can be challenging, but the rewards will be worth every moment.
