10 Insights Gained from Fatherhood

  1. Athletic Skills? Not So Much.
Becoming a dad has made it crystal clear that I’m no sports prodigy. Watching my little one struggle to catch a soft ball from mere feet away is a humbling experience. While there are certainly kids at the park who seem destined for glory, countless others seem more likely to excel in competitive snack eating than athletics.
  2. The Ubiquitous Cell Phone.
No matter where you try to stash your phone, a child will always find it. I learned this quickly when my son, at just ten months, figured out how to unlock my iPhone. Sure, it’s a lifesaver during tantrums, but once they realize you stream their favorite shows on it, expect them to be on a relentless search for it.
  3. Park Dynamics with Moms.
I’m not saying all moms at the park give me the side-eye, but many certainly do. As the primary caregiver during afternoons, I often find myself at the local park, where a group of moms seems suspicious of my presence. With every outing, I get the feeling they think I’m up to no good. You’d think after seeing me play with my son for the twentieth time, they’d ease up a bit.
  4. Dad Privileges.
It’s true: the bar is set surprisingly low for fathers. When moms are out with their kids and a stain appears on a shirt, the judgment is fierce. Yet, when a dad is spotted with a child, it’s all praise, regardless of how mismatched their outfits are. We dads are fully aware of this and, let’s be honest, we might take advantage of it.
  5. Hypocrisy Unmasked.
Before stepping into fatherhood, I’d often judge parents who traveled with small children or had kids who threw tantrums in public. Now, however, I’ve had my share of meltdowns and travel woes. I sincerely apologize to all the parents I may have unfairly criticized between 2000 and 2013.
  6. Ten Minutes Feels Like an Eternity.
When your child is screaming in the backseat, ten minutes becomes a monumental stretch of time. It’s a countdown filled with desperate attempts to soothe them, bribes of snacks, and repeated renditions of “Wheels on the Bus.” It’s astonishing how my perception of time has shifted since having a child.
  7. The Art of Food Sneaking.
Leading by example when it comes to healthy eating is essential, but when it comes to indulgence, sneaking snacks is almost an art form. If I crack open a bag of chips, my little one will immediately pester me for some. Sometimes, I just want to enjoy a few cookies in peace, shielded by a newspaper.
  8. Toddler Footwear as a Weapon.
If someone could harness the pain inflicted by a toddler kicking you in the ankle with their tiny shoes, it could be a game-changer in international relations. Those seemingly innocent little shoes pack a mighty punch when they hit at just the right angle.
  9. Chore Delegation Dreams.
Every father has that moment when they realize they can start passing off household chores to their growing child. Whether it’s mowing the lawn or taking out the trash, I find myself making mental notes of all the tasks my son will be tackling once he’s old enough.
  10. Quilts Abound.
Before parenthood, I never owned a quilt. Now, thanks to generous gifts, I find myself with an overflowing collection. While I appreciate the thoughtfulness of friends and family, I’d recommend steering clear of quilts as baby gifts in the future. On the bright side, should nuclear winter strike, we’re well-equipped.
