While I’ve chosen to remain childless, there are moments when I find myself contemplating the joys of parenthood. Of course, the usual motivations are well known: building a loving family, nurturing intelligent and responsible individuals who will make a difference, and cherishing the unique experiences of watching a child grow from infancy to adulthood. There’s also the undeniable charm and cuteness that children bring into our lives.
Yet, beyond these conventional reasons, there are several lesser-known perks of parenting that I find particularly appealing—the “membership benefits” that those of us without kids miss out on.
1. A Valid Reason to End Phone Calls
“I totally understand your point and would love to continue this discussion—oh no, the baby’s crying. Can I call you back?” Friends with children effortlessly exit phone conversations, and I envy their ability to hang up without explanation. Simply stating, “I’m done talking” or “I was about to shop for inflatable travel pillows” doesn’t quite cut it.
2. Extra Hands for Chores
Yes, having kids means more mess and more chores, but it also means having little helpers. While we childless folks can get tired after a long day, those with kids can delegate small tasks like clearing the table or loading the dishwasher, making life a bit easier.
3. Priority Boarding on Flights
Despite my efforts to achieve frequent flyer status, I’ve resigned myself to being a “Group C” boarder indefinitely. However, parents traveling with young children get the privilege of boarding early, which is a major advantage. Sure, managing a stroller and a crying child can be tough, but at least they don’t have to fight for overhead bin space.
4. An Excuse to Indulge in Ice Cream
A friend recently shared that she’s enjoyed ice cream almost daily this summer, all thanks to her daughter’s cravings. She embraces the chance to create sweet summer memories, and I can’t help but wish for a similar excuse.
5. Concerts for Kids’ Music
Am I destined to miss out on live performances of catchy kids’ songs? I would love to rock out to tunes like “I’m Gonna Catch You” by Laurie Berkner Band without feeling out of place.
6. Convenient Storage Solutions
Those strollers with their myriad hooks and compartments look like they could carry everything from my gym bag to groceries. I often wonder why I can’t benefit from that level of convenience simply because I’m not a parent.
7. A Free Pass on Unwanted Events
On reality shows, characters like Bethany manage to skip awkward social gatherings and unexpected trips because they prioritize their children. While I might not leave a tropical vacation early, I’d love a socially acceptable excuse for declining invitations to less-than-thrilling events.
8. A Chance to Relive Childhood Adventures
I want to experience the thrill of theme parks, water slides, and playgrounds without the judgment that comes with being an adult. Imagine the freedom of enjoying swings and slides without worrying about appearances!
9. A Second Chance at Ivy League Admissions
Parents might not be meant to live vicariously through their children, but I can’t help but fantasize about helping my future child navigate the college application process. With my current knowledge, I’d like to think I could guide them to an Ivy League school, offering insights into crafting the perfect admissions essay.
