10 Struggles Moms Face After 4 P.M.

When the clock strikes four in the afternoon, I feel completely drained. The thought of preparing a meal I don’t want to cook and having a glass (or three) of wine while sinking into my bed sounds like pure bliss. If you’re a mom who can keep it together at this hour, I truly envy you. For me, this is the time when my patience runs out, and I can’t handle any of the following:

1. Endless Questions

Kids are curious creatures, and their inquiries never stop, especially as the day winds down. By this time, I can barely remember my own name, yet they keep coming with more complex questions. I’d gladly pay a fortune to make this barrage of inquiries cease. Perhaps I’ll just wear a sign that says: “Questions are off-limits, please.”

2. Last-Minute Bake Sale Reminders

Oh no, not again! Discovering that I signed up to bake treats for a bake sale tomorrow is a nightmare. Whether I forgot myself or someone else volunteered me, the realization hits hard at the worst possible moment. Now I need to whip up three dozen cookies and manage dinner at the same time.

3. Receiving a Late Notice from My Partner

I count down the minutes until my partner arrives home, dreaming of a moment of solitude in the bathroom. But then, the dreaded text arrives: he’ll be late. Just great—now I’m one step closer to a mental meltdown.

4. Running Out of Caffeine

I could have sworn I had more coffee or soda in the house, but alas, it’s all gone. The thought of loading everyone up in the car for a caffeine fix is daunting, but I decide it’s worth it. After a lengthy battle of getting everyone ready, I might as well grab some fast food to make it a complete evening.

5. Facing a House Full of Mess

By this hour, I’ve already cleaned up countless messes, from breakfast spills to a chaotic playroom. I simply can’t muster the energy to tackle any more chaos. So, I resort to letting the kids zone out in front of screens; it’s an acceptable solution for now.

6. Tattling Kids

I’ve put out enough fires throughout the day, and my patience is gone. At this point, I just want to let them sort it out themselves. Sorry kids, I’m not playing referee anymore.

7. A Whiny Child

At this point in the day, any whining feels unbearable. Morning complaints are manageable, but by afternoon, they make my stomach churn. I wish the kids would save their whining for when they can pour me a glass of wine.

8. Dinner Dilemmas

Realizing that the chicken I planned to cook is either bad or still frozen is a huge letdown. I contemplate takeout, but we just did that two nights in a row. Hot dogs it is; we’ll aim for better tomorrow.

9. My Partner’s Bathroom Retreat

I understand that everyone needs a moment to themselves after a long day, but when my partner retreats to the bathroom for half an hour, I can’t help but feel frustrated. That’s a luxury that seems to be reserved for anyone but moms.

10. Unexpected Evening Meetings

Just as I’m settling into comfy clothes, I glance at the calendar and remember that I have a meeting scheduled for tonight. Seriously? The internal debate of “Should I stay or should I go?” begins.

By 4 p.m., our bodies and minds have been pushed to their limits, yet somehow we manage to survive until bedtime. And when we finally catch a glimpse of our little ones sleeping peacefully, we often find ourselves feeling nostalgic and ready to tackle another day—only to hit the same wall again tomorrow.
