I was at the park pushing my daughter on the swing when a fellow mom approached me to chat and break the silence. “Are you babysitting your granddaughter today?” she queried, her tone casual.
The next instance occurred while I was at the grocery store. As I handed over my credit card, the cashier beamed and said, “What a lucky little girl to be out shopping with Grandma!”
Afterward, I couldn’t help but glance at my reflection in the visor mirror to check for gray hairs. Sure, it’s becoming more common to see moms in their 40s with infants, but I understand how confusion can happen. After all, my grandmother was just 40 when she became a grandmother.
I didn’t correct either of those women who mistook me for my child’s grandma. There was no reason to create an awkward moment—or seek cosmetic fixes for that matter. Here’s why being an older mom is fantastic:
- Forget buying Play-Doh to entertain the kids; my skin has lost much of its elasticity, making it a fun plaything for little hands that can stretch and twist it for hours on end.
- Math practice? No problem! They can count my wrinkles and age spots as a creative way to work on their arithmetic.
- Diaper coupons are a win-win, as I’m in need of them just as much as the baby!
- I’m not in a rush to potty train; I can tell her that in 40 years she’ll probably need them again, so why stress? It’s similar to questioning why we need to make the bed each day.
- Messes? I don’t get upset if they have accidents; frankly, my own challenges are even more significant.
- The baby food I prepare doubles as a nutritious snack for me, thanks to my aging teeth!
- Coloring books? No need! The kids love to grab a brown marker and “color” my gray hairs instead, and picking out my new hair color each month is like a fun shopping trip for art supplies.
- Many older moms have older kids too. This means I can relax at the playground while my older children take turns pushing the baby on the swing—definitely my time to enjoy a latte and some reading!
- Nursing a newborn is a breeze with sagging breasts; they simply rest beside me, making nighttime feedings so much easier. I could even nurse while cooking!
- When traveling, there’s no need for a pillow, as my perimenopausal belly provides a perfect resting spot for my kids.
When I do become a grandmother, I’ll fit the part perfectly!
